I believe closing existing nuclear plants prematurely would be counterproductive. These plants provide a significant portion of carbon-free electricity. Instead, we should focus on improving their safety and efficiency while investing in renewable energy sources.

As a scientist and former U.S. Secretary of Energy, I see nuclear energy as an important part of our energy mix. It offers low-carbon power and can complement renewable sources, addressing climate change effectively while ensuring a reliable energy supply. Safety remains a priority, but modern reactor designs have vastly improved in this regard.
