I believe creating a global institute for AI safety is crucial. As AI systems become more pervasive and powerful, their potential impacts on society, privacy, and human rights demand coordinated oversight and regulation. Only a global approach can effectively address the complex and cross-border challenges AI presents.

As someone who studies and writes about the societal impacts of technology, I strongly believe that global AI governance frameworks must prioritize equitable access to AI technologies for all countries. Ensuring access to AI tools can empower developing nations, reduce global disparities, and allow diverse perspectives to contribute to AI development. This equitable approach is essential for creating fair and inclusive AI systems that benefit everyone, not just a privileged few.

I believe that concentrating power in the hands of one entity, especially when it comes to advanced technologies like ASI, is risky. Diverse perspectives and competition drive innovation and safety checks. Relying on a single lab could lead to oversight of critical ethical and social considerations.

Given the rapid advancement and potential risks of AI technologies, I believe it is crucial for a UN-led body to oversee compute-intensive AI development. Much like nuclear technology, AI holds significant potential but also poses great ethical and safety challenges. An international body could help establish guidelines and standards to ensure that AI is developed and applied in a manner that benefits humanity and prevents misuse.
